LGBTQ+ Counselling in Hong Kong
Comfortable with who you are? Still hiding sometimes? Somewhere in between?
Affirmative counselling starts with understanding your experience
— whatever that has been.
Even when your current challenges have nothing to do with being LGBTQ+, working with an affirmative counsellor can make a difference.
Talking about sex and intimacy
Whatever your sexual orientation or gender identity, talking about your sex life, desires or difficulties with intimacy can feel embarrassing or even shameful. In counselling with me, you can talk openly about these things without fear of being judged.

Why “gay-friendly” isn’t enough
Most counsellors today would describe themselves as gay-friendly. But being a gay-friendly counsellor is only the starting point. LGBTQ+ affirmative counselling goes further.

LGBTQ+ affirmative counsellors understand the external pressures and internal stresses that can come with being LGBTQ+ — and how these experiences can shape the way we deal with relationships, family, work, anxiety and other challenges.

That means you can speak freely without having to explain, censor or edit yourself. It can help you understand your challenges more clearly and find solutions that actually work for you.

Nothing about your relationships or sex life is going to shock me
Whatever your relationships look like, whoever you are attracted to, or whatever your sex life involves, you can talk about it openly. Or not talk about it at all. You decide what matters to the counselling.

The same goes for coming out. It’s a choice we make every day, and it affects how we live our lives. An affirmative counsellor can help you decide how you want to deal with coming out, while respecting the choices you make.

You can be proud of who you are — and still carry some of the baggage
Living with a sexuality or gender identity that differs from society’s expectations will expose us to minority stress — the extra pressure that comes from those expectations and from discrimination we have experienced.

Over time, some of this can become internalised stigma. We may learn to hide parts of ourselves, avoid judgement, fit in or work harder for acceptance. These are normal ways of adapting to the world around us, and we all carry some of them with us.

They can shape how we approach life, often without us realising it. An affirmative counsellor understands these processes and can help you recognise when they are helping you — and when they are getting in your way.

Looking for an LGBTQ+ affirmative counsellor?
I have benefited from affirmative counselling myself, and later studied and trained in affirmative practice to understand how it can help LGBTQ+ people. I have learned not to make assumptions — we all experience and cope with minority stress differently.

I will meet you where you are in your journey and take the time to understand your environment. Having lived for many years in both Western and Chinese cultures, I also understand how sexuality, identity, family and social expectations can look very different across cultures.
